CHAPTER SEVEN

IT HAD ALL happened so fast.

Amber’s pregnancy.

His uncle’s death.

The trip home for the funeral. The hand-picked interviews announcing his upcoming succession. The chance to fulfil the destiny he had grown up believing would be his.

A very fast visit to see Sadie and her new fiancé, his old friend Will, who had brought him back to earth.

And then back to small-town Australia to get his bride. And to officially remove his resort plans from council consideration.

Used to working by the seat of his pants, he’d taken each revelation and rolled with it.

Only now, in the dark quiet of the private plane, the ocean sliding beneath them with a half-finished glass of Scotch in his hand, did Hugo have the chance to unpack the enormity of what had happened.

He had the chance, but he chose not to take it. Instead he twisted his Scotch back and forth, hypnotised by the play of light in the golden liquid.

Sovereign Prince. Father. Husband.

Husband. Father. Sovereign Prince.

Closing his eyes, he lifted the drink and downed it in one go. Wincing as the heat burned the back of his throat.

“Hey.”

Hugo looked up, saw Amber leaning in the doorway. Her hair was up in a messy bun and the colourful crocheted blanket she’d used to have on the end of her bed was wrapped about her shoulders. Her eyes were puffy from sleep.

“Are you drunk?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“Is this something I need to worry about?”

Hugo laughed, running a hand up the back of his neck. “Not at all. I was raising a quiet glass to my uncle.”

“It looked like you were drowning your sorrows.”

“Same thing, I would think.”

“Mmm.”

Hugo shook off the funk, quickly moving the paperwork he had piled up on the chair opposite his. “Sorry, come in. Sit.”

“What’s all that?”

He readied himself to brush it off as “nothing”, before remembering Marguerite’s assertion that the men in his family had not proven themselves equipped for longevity, delegation or fidelity. He had no problem with the third, and the first was out of his hands. But the ability to see and use the resources at his disposal? That was his bag.

Amber was an outstanding natural resource. It would behove him to start as he meant to go on.

“Details of coronation plans,” he said, pointing to the document printed on Marguerite’s letterhead. “Articles of law currently before parliament. The notebooks are Reynaldo’s private records. If there’s anything you’re keen to have a look through, feel free.”

She blinked at him and shook her head. But after a beat she moved to sit in the chair across from his.

“Everything okay?” he asked. “Do you need food? There are more blankets...somewhere. The staff are all over that. Shall I call someone?”

She laughed softly, then pressed a fist over a yawn. “I’m fine. Just...antsy, I guess.” She curled her feet beneath her. “You looked to be in deep thought just now. Took me a couple of tries to get your attention.”

“I have things on my mind.”

“You and me both.” A beat, then, “Anything you’d like to talk about?”

“With you?”

“No, with the seatbelts.
